Job Description

Responsible for designing and implementing manufacturing processes, equipment and plant (from pilot to fully operational) to achieve the production goals of the organization. Position is also responsible for developing programs to control machining or processing of metal parts by automatic machine tools, equipment or systems.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES include the following:

• Determine the sequence of machine operations and select the proper cutting tools needed to machine work pieces into the desired shapes in the routings.

• Develop a Routing Review process to eliminate errors and retest programs to check that problems have been resolved with the programmers.

• Analyze job orders, drawings, blueprints specifications and design data to calculate dimensions, and update drawings accordingly.

• Determine reference points, machine cutting paths or hole locations and compute angular and linear dimensions, radii and curvatures.

• Observe machines on trial runs or conduct computer simulations to ensure that programs and machinery will function properly and produce items that meet specifications.

• Compare computer printouts with original part specifications and blueprints to verify accuracy of instructions.

• Modify existing drawings to enhance efficiency.

• Create and compile necessary documents to aid in setting up jobs and machines.

• Enter computer commands to store or retrieve parts patterns, graphic displays or programs that transfer data to other media.

• Provide quotes and costs to outside customers.

• Create ECNs (Engineering Change Notes) for parts and process changes.

Additional responsibilities and duties may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: Minimal requirements for education, knowledge and experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering with 3-5 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Mathematics — Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics and their applications.

• Mechanical — Knowledge of machines and tools including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance. Specific knowledge of cutting tools and various tool coatings and uses such as TICN, TIN and AITIN.

• Materials — Knowledge of tool steels used in die work and how each respond to heating/treating at different Rockwell hardness.

• Design — Knowledge of design techniques, tools and principals involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.

• Engineering and Technology — Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.

• Production and Processing — Knowledge of raw materials and various steels (D2, A2, S7, O1, M4 powdered metal), production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods. Knowledge of metal stamping and forming dies. Strong understanding of tooling clearances and fits. Strong understanding of RA and RM surface finishes.

• Inspection— CMM inspection capabilities.

 Education and Training — Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects.

• Programming — Writing computer programs for CNC equipment.

• Software and Hardware- Ability to draw using AutoCAD 2008/ 2014, SolidWorks software, micro-estimating, Griffo Brothers, Mazak Control and programming, and SmartCam.

• Complex Problem Solving — Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.

• Operation Monitoring — Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.

• Systems Analysis — Determining how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes.

• “Mark up” prints and drawings to create manufacturing prints.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS: This position requires the ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities in the following environment:

• Near Vision — Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

• Perceptual Speed — Ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences among sets of letters, numbers, objects, pictures, or patterns. The things to be compared may be presented at the same time or one after the other. This ability also includes comparing a presented object with a remembered object.

• Information Ordering — Ability to arrange things or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations).

• Control Precision — Ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions.

• Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.

• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

• Work schedule generally consists of 40-50 hours per week, which may include overtime, on-call status, evenings, and/or weekends.
