POSITION SUMMARY:  Analyzes specifications, lays out metal stock, sets up and operates machine tools, and fits and assembles parts to fabricate special machines and their components, precision metalworking dies, cutting tools, jigs and fixtures, and gauges, applying knowledge of tool and die design and construction, shop mathematics, metal properties, and layout, machining, and assembly procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

·           Studies specifications, such as blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required and machines to be used to fabricate parts.

·           Computes dimensions, plans layout, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations.

·           Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining.

·           Sets up and operates machine tools, such as lathes, milling machine, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications.

·           Lifts machined parts manually or using hoist, and positions and secures parts on surface plate or worktable, using devices, such as vises, V-blocks, and angle plates.

·           Smooths flat and contoured surfaces, using scrapers, abrasive stones, and grinders, and fits and assembles parts together and into assemblies and mechanisms, using hand tools.

·           Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances, using measuring instruments, such as dial indicators, gauge blocks, thickness gauges, comparator, and micrometers.

·           Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part.

·           Develops specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools sketches design of product.

·           Communicates with co-workers and supervisor to receive instructions and coordinate activities.  Communicates with Engineering Department and customer service specialist to resolve drawing and machinability issues.

·           Works independently, but as part of a team, with minimal oversight.

·           Attends work in person, on time, on a regular and reliable basis.

·           Completes all tasks in an accurate, complete and timely manner.  Is detail oriented.

·           Follows directions.  Asks questions to clarify if needs more information.

·           Follows all safety protocols, helps others follow all safety protocols and alerts their supervisor or management to any safety risks that are discovered.

 

JOB QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

·           Training and Experience:  6 years or more of trade school, vocational education, work experience, or apprenticeship.

·           Machining Practices.  Mechanically inclined.  Knowledge of standard machining tools (including drills, endmills, taps, indicators, edge finders, etc.) and practices (including tool touch-offs).

·           Quality Control.  Knowledge and ability to use common quality control techniques and instruments to inspect work pieces to a blue print.

·           Reading and Comprehension:  Ability to interpret and understand instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, blue print, or schedule form, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, job procedures, purchase requests, purchase orders, drawings, set up sheets, process sheets, etc. Ability to write a routine report.  

·           Math Ability:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret graphs.  Good working knowledge of shop math including trig and geometry.

·           Computer Skills:  Ability to enter and retrieve data relevant to job function from computer using ERP system and other software.

·           Reasoning Ability:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form by many internal customers, i.e., Accounting, Engineering, Customer Service and Senior Management of the company.

·           Physical Demands:  The employee is required to:

- - lift up to 60 pounds on a regular basis,

- stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to the floor.

- exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or

- exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or

- exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects

- repetitive motion

- contact stress

- work in sometimes awkward positions
